A COMPENDIUM TABLE OF THE FURTHS

by Simon Glover (2013)

Introduction and Explanation of the Table

The following Table has been compiled to accompany Robin Campbell’s Variorum Table of the Munros and Tops, featured in his book The Munroist’s Companion (SMT, 1999), pp.167-203. It contains data gathered from the following sources:-

Tables giving all the 3000-Ft. Mountains of England, Wales and Ireland. Compiled by David C. Maxwell. (Privately printed, 1959) Abbreviated [Ma].

Munro’s Tables and Other Tables of Lower Hills. Revised and Edited by Derek A. Bearhop. (SMT, 1997) Abbreviated [Be].

There are five columns of information: Name; Height in feet; Height in metres; Grid Reference and Map Number. An asterisk denotes a separate mountain, determined by Maxwell’s formula: 500 feet drop, proportionately reduced to 50 feet at two miles. Heights in square brackets are conversions from the other standard (3.2808ft.=1m). 7th Series 1-inch map numbers are given for England and Wales, and the ½-inch  map for Ireland. (Bearhop does not provide 1:50 000 map numbers for the three countries, but these are given here for completeness.)

Finally, summits are listed in order of Maxwell’s Table 1, except those introduced later.

Footnotes to Maxwell’s Table 1

[1] All the English summits can also be found on the 7th Edition 1-inch Tourist Map of the Lake District.
[2] 6-inch Map only. 3050 contour on the 1-inch and 2½-inch Maps.
[3] Named only on the 6-inch Map.
[4] Aneroid estimation (Eric and D.C. Maxwell). 3000 contour on the 6-inch and 1-inch Maps; 3025
contour on the 2½-inch Map.
[5] Owing to the change of the Ordnance Datum from Liverpool to Newlyn, eight of the Welsh summits
appear in the 7th edition of the 1-inch map as one foot higher than in earlier editions. The new values
have been used.
[6] O.S. information – no height given on O.S. Maps.
[7] So named on the 6-inch Map. Crib-y-ddysgl on the 1-inch Map refers to the ridge.
[8] 6-inch Map and O.S. information. The 3023 point on the 1-inch Map is at the end of the ridge, about
100 yards E.N.E. of the summit.
[9] Not named on O.S. Maps. The names used here…are supplied by Mr. W.M. Docharty, who is in turn
indebted to Irish friends for guidance. The [approximate] heights are from aneroid measurements by Mr.
Eric Maxwell.
